The RD-300 is intended as a accurate simulator-tester of aircraft weather radar instruments. The RD-300, in combination with the oscilloscope, can execute almost all routine radar testing. Because the RD-300 is linked to the unit under-test all the way through just one calibrated coaxial cable, there is no need to redesign the test equipment to calculate different parameters.

The RD-300 has a signal generator system which by design acquires and monitors the magnetron frequency to remove regular retuning of the signal generator to compensate for magnetron or signal generator drift. The signal generator is modulated to replicate storm cell echoes in several modes, as well as Contour Mode. Contour Mode is designed for fast calibration and checkout of contour threshold circuits. The range delay of these virtual storm cell echoes is established in microseconds or nautical miles. Multiple returns can be produced to verify and regulate the radar range ring display. An auxiliary modulation mode make narrow, short range pulses for testing multimode radars.

Value of the magnetron frequency and PRF shows on the Digital Display. The magnetron state and spectrum characteristics can be verified by means of the detector and disciminator outputs. Peak power values are achievable with a full scale sensitivity of 12 kW (or 120 kW peaks with the external 10 dB attenuator).

The IF Signal Generator covers from 20 to 70 MHz and can be swept. The two-Volt-rms maximum output can be utilize for high level IF or AFC testing. Bandwidths and center frequencies are calculated by the Marker Frequency Generator for the period of swept IF tests. The RD-300 also has antenna simulator output, which allows the display assembly to be swept at a uneven rate.
